Matt started playing at the age of ten. He had shown an interest in music from an early age, as his dad plays saxophone in many big bands around London. It wasn't long before Matt was tapping on everything with a pair of drum sticks, so he was taken to the Surbiton Royal British Legion Youth Marching Band and Corps of Drums. Within a few years Matt was leading the Corps and helping win many trophies. He was also attended many big bands and concert bands at this time including the notorious Ken Mackintosh band. Ken's 'enthusiastic' style helped Matt learn about the art of playing different styles and reading.

With the style of the Legion Band based very heavily on HM Royal Marines Band Service Matt soon decided this was to be his career and with a little practice on tuned percussion passed the entry exams. He joined HM Royal Marines School of Music, Deal in 1995, as a percussionist. Having joined such a high profile establishment meant that he would receive great training from many people including Paul Cameron and Don Lusher and master classes from Craig Blundell, Neil Grover, Ed Thigpen, Graham Johns and more.

The learning of styles and constant sight reading meant that after the three years training Matt was ready for the main band service and joined the Plymouth Band in 1998. Here Matt would travel heavily and play many high profile engagements for Royalty, Heads of State, celebrities and others. He would also do numerous sessions with the bands of the Royal Marines and has appeared on six of their albums and performed on BBC Radio and BBC TV.

Matt decided to leave the Royal Marines in 2004 and chose to pursue a career as a professional freelance drummer. He attended the Brighton Institute of Modern Music for year to gain his Higher Diploma. Matt now teaches and plays for various projects throughout the UK. He has been playing for numerous jazz singers including Gary Williams, Tammy Weis and Iain McKenzie and various function bands and sessions.
